This seminar teaches students to look carefully, to think deeply, and to write elegantly about the built environment. Students read about, visit, and then write about a range of urban places in the Bay Area, including homes, neighborhoods, and forms of urban transportation. We workshop students’ essays, reviews, and other short forms, as they write about their own and others’ experiences of the city and its buildings. Readings include notable examples of urban interpretation, by authors such as Rebecca Solnit, Mike Davis, DJ Waldie, JB Jackson, and Joan Didion as well as by the instructors Margaret Crawford and Alec Stewart.
