ART 160 | Special Topics in Visual Studies: Art Criticism for a Changing World

2022 Spring | Mon, Weds 1–4 pm | COURSE #29504 | UNITS: 4

Allan deSouza & Kavena Hambira

This course encourages multiple approaches to writing, emphasizing how climate crisis and recent social reckonings around racial and gender equity have placed new expectations on art and its criticism. Students can enroll from any major and without prior experience of art or art history. We will consider “art” in its broadest sense, from museum and gallery cultures, to public and online interventions, and to what lies beyond current conventions. The course will be practical and theoretical, engaging with art directly, and will provide in-depth training for art interpretation, writing reviews, and longer essays.
